As part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, Dr. M.S. Kannan, Dean of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, delivered a live awareness speech on Tamil Nadu most popular News Channel News Tamil 24x7 to educate the public about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the importance of adopting a tobacco-free lifestyle
The programme was conducted under the World No Tobacco Day 2026 theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.” The session focused on exposing the strategies used by the tobacco and nicotine industries to attract consumers, particularly adolescents and young adults, and highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures and public awareness.
During the live television interaction, the Dean emphasized the serious health consequences of tobacco consumption, including oral cancer, lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, and various oral health problems. The public was educated about the dangers associated with both smoking and smokeless forms of tobacco, which continue to be prevalent in the community.
Special attention was given to the relationship between tobacco use and oral cancer. The Dean explained the early signs and symptoms of precancerous lesions and oral cancer and stressed the importance of regular oral examinations for early detection and timely intervention. Viewers were encouraged to seek professional dental consultation whenever they notice abnormal changes in the oral cavity.
The awareness program also addressed the growing concern of nicotine addiction among youth. The Dean highlighted how attractive product designs, flavoured tobacco products, social media influence, and misleading promotional strategies contribute to the initiation and continuation of tobacco use among younger populations. The role of parents, educators, healthcare professionals, and society in preventing tobacco initiation was strongly emphasized.
The programme further focused on the benefits of quitting tobacco, including improved oral and general health, reduced risk of cancer and chronic diseases, enhanced quality of life, and increased life expectancy. Information regarding tobacco cessation support and counselling services was shared to motivate users to take positive steps toward quitting tobacco.
The live session served as an effective platform for disseminating scientifically accurate information to the public. Through this mass media outreach activity, viewers gained a better understanding of the health risks associated with tobacco use and the importance of adopting a tobacco-free lifestyle.
