Theme of the Day: "Smiles Without Barriers” – World No Tobacco Day Awareness and Oral Screening Camp for the Gypsy Community

As part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, organized an Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp for the gypsy community at Thiruvanmiyur on 20th May 2026 under the theme “Smiles Without Barriers.” The program highlighted the importance of equitable access to oral healthcare while emphasizing tobacco cessation, oral cancer prevention, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles among underserved populations.

The camp was conducted with the objective of creating awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use, its association with oral cancer and other oral diseases, and the benefits of adopting tobacco-free lifestyles. The gypsy community, which often faces challenges in accessing routine healthcare services, actively participated in the outreach initiative.

A dedicated team of faculty members, postgraduate students, and interns from the Department of Public Health Dentistry carried out comprehensive oral examinations and screening procedures for community members. Participants were educated about the various forms of tobacco consumption, the risks associated with smoking and smokeless tobacco products, the early warning signs of oral cancer, and the importance of seeking timely professional care.

Interactive health education sessions were conducted to encourage tobacco cessation and reinforce the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices. Participants were motivated to make healthier lifestyle choices and were informed about the long-term health benefits of quitting tobacco. Educational pamphlets containing information on tobacco cessation, oral cancer prevention, and oral health maintenance were distributed to all attendees to strengthen awareness and support behavior change.

As a gesture to promote preventive oral healthcare, toothbrushes and toothpaste kits were distributed to all participants. The outreach program witnessed enthusiastic participation from the community and successfully enhanced awareness regarding the dangers of tobacco use while promoting oral health and wellbeing.

The camp reflected the institution’s commitment to community-oriented healthcare by reaching socially vulnerable populations and advancing the objectives of World No Tobacco Day 2026 through education, early detection, and preventive oral health interventions.
