In observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, organized a Free Dental Checkup and Oral Cancer Awareness Program at Idhaya Vaasal Elders Home, Pallikaranai on 26th May 2026.


The program aimed to promote oral health awareness among the elderly residents and emphasize the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. A comprehensive dental screening was conducted by the faculty members and students of the Department of Public Health Dentistry. The oral health status of the residents was assessed, and appropriate advice regarding oral hygiene maintenance and treatment needs was provided.


As part of the awareness initiative, educational sessions on the prevention and early detection of oral cancer were conducted. The participants were informed about the risk factors associated with tobacco use, common signs and symptoms of oral cancer, and the importance of regular oral examinations for early diagnosis.


Informative pamphlets highlighting the dangers of tobacco and preventive measures against oral cancer were distributed to all beneficiaries. The residents actively participated in the awareness session and clarified their oral health-related queries.


The program was successful in creating awareness about tobacco-related oral diseases and promoting the importance of maintaining good oral health among the elderly population. The Department of Public Health Dentistry remains committed to community outreach activities that contribute to the overall health and well-being of society.
