Theme of the Day: “Drive Towards Health” – World No Tobacco Day Awareness and Oral Screening Camp for Auto Drivers

In observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital in association with Indian Dental Association, organized a comprehensive Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp for auto drivers at Pallikaranai on 20th May 2026 under the theme “Drive Towards Health.”

The initiative was aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and promoting tobacco cessation among auto drivers, a group often exposed to occupational stress and a higher prevalence of tobacco-related habits. The program emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare, early detection of oral diseases, and the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices to improve overall well-being.

A team comprising faculty members, postgraduate students, and interns from the Department of Public Health Dentistry conducted detailed oral examinations and oral cancer screenings for the participants. Individuals presenting with suspicious oral lesions, potentially malignant disorders, and other tobaccoassociated oral conditions were identified and provided with appropriate counseling. Those requiring further evaluation were referred for additional diagnostic assessment and management to facilitate early diagnosis and timely intervention.

An interactive awareness session was conducted to educate participants about the dangers of smoking and smokeless tobacco products, the relationship between tobacco use and oral cancer, early warning signs of oral disease, and the benefits of quitting tobacco. The session also highlighted the importance of regular dental check-ups and maintaining proper oral hygiene. Educational pamphlets containing information on tobacco cessation, oral cancer prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices were distributed to reinforce the awareness messages delivered during the program.

To encourage better oral hygiene habits, toothbrushes and toothpaste kits were distributed to all participants. The camp received enthusiastic participation from the auto drivers and served as an effective platform to deliver accessible oral healthcare services while promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle among a working population that often has limited opportunities for routine health screening.
