Inaugural Function of Oral Cancer Awareness & Screening Camp


The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, in association with the Indian Dental Association and IDA Chengalpattu Branch, successfully organized the Inaugural Function of the Oral Cancer Awareness & Screening Camp on 20th May 2026 at Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital. The program was conducted under the theme “Early Detection Saves Lives” with the objective of creating awareness regarding oral cancer prevention and emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis through community outreach initiatives.


The inaugural ceremony commenced with the gracious arrival of dignitaries, followed by the rendition of Tamil Thai Vazhthu by the college choir. The occasion was marked by the ceremonial collaring of Dr. G. Thiruppathy, President, IDA Chengalpattu Branch, and the administration of the IDA Oath, which was collectively recited by all members, signifying professional commitment and service toward society.


The traditional lighting of the Kuthuvilakku by the dignitaries symbolized the formal inauguration of the Oral Cancer Awareness and Screening Program.


The welcome address was delivered by Dr. G. Thiruppathy, who emphasized the growing need for awareness and early screening initiatives to reduce the burden of oral cancer within the community.


The inaugural address was presented by Dr. M. S. Kannan, Dean, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, who highlighted the role of academic institutions and healthcare professionals in promoting preventive healthcare and community service. He also appreciated the collaborative efforts undertaken by the Department of Public Health Dentistry and the Indian Dental Association in organizing the awareness campaign. The dignitary was honored by the President and Secretary of IDA Chengalpattu Branch.


A special address was delivered by Dr. A. P. Maheshwar, President, Tamil Nadu State Indian Dental Association (TNSIDA), who stressed the importance of statewide oral cancer awareness initiatives and the necessity of integrating preventive dental care into public health programs. He was honored by the organizing committee in recognition of his valuable contribution.


The gathering also featured a video address by Dr. K. P. Senthamarai Kannan, Honorary Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Indian Dental Association, who appreciated the efforts of the institution and encouraged continuous community-based oral health programs.


Further enriching the event, special addresses were delivered by Dr. Bhuminathan, Registrar, Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital, and Dr. Yogarajan, Chairman, Community Dental Health, TNSIDA. Both dignitaries highlighted the significance of collaborative healthcare outreach activities and emphasized the importance of early cancer detection in improving treatment outcomes. They were honored by the organizing team for their esteemed presence and encouragement.


Dr. Anita, Professor and Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, addressed the gathering and spoke about the department’s commitment toward preventive dentistry, tobacco cessation awareness, and community oral healthcare initiatives. The dignitary was honored by Dr. U. N. Lokeshwari, CDH Convener.


A detailed briefing regarding the objectives, implementation, and outreach activities of the Oral Cancer Awareness and Screening Camp was delivered by Dr. U. N. Lokeshwari, who elaborated on the planned awareness drives, oral screening procedures, and public health education initiatives to be conducted as part of the program.


The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. K. Sreekanth, Honorary Secretary, IDA Chengalpattu Branch, who expressed sincere gratitude to all dignitaries, faculty members, organizers, students, and participants for their support and contribution toward the successful conduct of the inaugural function. The program formally concluded with the National Anthem.


The inaugural ceremony served as a significant platform in promoting oral cancer awareness and reflected the collective commitment of academic institutions and professional organizations toward strengthening preventive healthcare and community-oriented dental services.
