As part of the Oral Cancer Awareness Program, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association, organized a comprehensive Oral Cancer Awareness and Screening Camp for auto drivers at Pallikaranai on 20th May 2026 under the theme “Drive Towards Health.”

The initiative was aimed at promoting awareness regarding oral cancer and encouraging early diagnosis among auto drivers, a group often exposed to occupational stress and high tobacco consumption habits. The program focused on educating participants about the importance of preventive healthcare, timely screening, and maintaining good oral hygiene practices.

A team comprising faculty members, postgraduate students, and interns from the Department of Public Health Dentistry conducted detailed oral examinations and free oral cancer screenings for the participants. Individuals presenting with suspicious oral lesions and potentially malignant disorders were identified and provided with appropriate counseling. In selected cases, free biopsy procedures were also facilitated to support early diagnosis and prompt intervention.

The awareness session highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco and areca nut use, early warning signs of oral cancer, and the benefits of regular dental check-ups. Educational pamphlets containing information on oral cancer prevention and healthy lifestyle practices were distributed to reinforce the awareness created during the program.

To encourage better oral hygiene habits, toothbrushes and toothpaste kits were distributed to all participants. The camp received active participation from the auto drivers and served as a meaningful platform to deliver accessible oral healthcare services to a working community that often has limited opportunities for routine health screening.

The program successfully reflected the institution’s commitment toward community outreach, preventive healthcare, and the early detection of oral cancer through collaborative public health initiatives.
