Oral Cancer Awareness and Screening Camp for Construction Workers

As part of the Oral Cancer Awareness Initiative, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association, organized an Oral Cancer Awareness and Screening Camp for construction workers at Kovilambakkam on 20th May 2026.

The outreach program was conducted with the objective of promoting awareness regarding oral cancer, emphasizing the significance of early diagnosis, and encouraging preventive oral healthcare practices among vulnerable occupational groups. Construction workers, who are often at increased risk due to tobacco-related habits and limited access to healthcare services, actively participated in the camp.

A comprehensive oral screening was carried out by the faculty members, postgraduate students, and interns of the Department of Public Health Dentistry. During the examination, several individuals were identified with suspicious oral lesions and potential signs of oral cancer. These participants were counseled regarding the importance of immediate medical evaluation and were referred for further diagnostic assessment and management.

An interactive awareness session was also conducted focusing on the harmful effects of tobacco and areca nut consumption, early warning signs of oral cancer, and the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene. Educational pamphlets containing information on oral cancer prevention and healthy lifestyle practices were distributed to all participants to reinforce the awareness messages delivered during the session.

In addition, toothbrushes and toothpaste kits were distributed as part of the institution’s commitment to promoting oral hygiene and preventive dental care among underserved communities.

The program witnessed enthusiastic participation and successfully achieved its objective of enhancing awareness, facilitating early detection of oral cancer, and encouraging healthier oral health practices among construction workers in the community.
