Skillsets you will garner

Training in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at SBDCH offers a comprehensive blend of clinical, surgical, and academic exposure that shapes a dental graduate into a confident clinician. The program focuses on developing both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies through hands-on training, case discussions, and patient-centered care.

Clinical Diagnostic Skills

Students learn to perform detailed history taking, clinical examination, and radiographic interpretation for patients presenting with maxillofacial pathologies, trauma, infections, and developmental anomalies. They gain expertise in formulating differential diagnoses and treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.

Surgical and Procedural Skills

The department provides extensive exposure to both minor and major surgical procedures, enabling students to:

Perform extractions, impactions, and alveoloplasty with precision.

Assist and observe trauma management, cyst enucleation, biopsy, and orthognathic procedures.

Develop proficiency in aseptic techniques, local anesthesia administration, and basic suturing methods.

Learn instrument handling, tissue management, and postoperative care.

This hands-on surgical training instills manual dexterity, confidence, and an appreciation for meticulous surgical planning.

Emergency and Trauma Management

Students are trained to handle maxillofacial emergencies, including facial fractures, abscess drainage, hemorrhage control, and airway maintenance. The emphasis on emergency response and first aid cultivates quick decision-making and crisis management abilities.

Radiologic and Diagnostic Imaging Interpretation

Proficiency in interpreting intraoral periapical radiographs, OPGs, and CBCT scans is emphasized. This helps in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for surgical and implant cases.

Patient Communication and Ethical Practice

Through continuous patient interaction, students develop strong communication and counseling skills—explaining diagnoses, obtaining informed consent, and delivering postoperative instructions. Ethical patient care and empathy are core values embedded throughout the training.

Research and Academic Skills

The department encourages academic writing, seminar presentations, and participation in clinical audits and research projects. This nurtures analytical thinking, evidence-based practice, and scholarly curiosity—essential for postgraduate pursuits.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Students gain exposure to multidisciplinary case management involving Prosthodontics, and Periodontics, understanding the integrated nature of oral and maxillofacial care.

Infection Control and Operation Theatre Protocol

Strict adherence to infection control measures, sterilization protocols, and theatre etiquette ensures that students uphold the highest standards of clinical hygiene and patient safety.

Professionalism and Leadership

Working under supervision, students learn team coordination, time management, and clinical documentation. The experience fosters leadership qualities and accountability essential for clinical practice.

The OMFS training at SBDCH equips students with a well-rounded skill set encompassing surgical precision, diagnostic acumen, patient empathy, and academic excellence. It lays a strong foundation for a successful career in dentistry and oral surgery while instilling lifelong learning and ethics.
