History of the Department

The Department was initiated in the year 1989. In the year 1992 Dr. Ramalingam, M.D (Microbiology), a senior faculty from Stanley Medical College and hospital with 21 years of teaching experience in government medical colleges Joined as Professor and Head of Microbiology Department and is still serving the institute as Professor Emeritus.

Mrs. K. Mahalakshmi M.Sc., (Medical Microbiology) joined as lecturer in this department in September 1993 and is still serving the institute. In the year 2006 as a faculty improvement programme of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, she was permitted to enroll for her Doctoral programme.

Dr. K. Mahalakshmi was awarded Ph.D., in Medical Microbiology in the year 2012 by University of Madras. With 30 years of teaching experience Professor Dr. K. Mahalakshmi, Ph.D., is presently heading the Department of Microbiology. Mrs. K. Padmavathy M.Sc., (Medical Microbiology) M.Phil, joined as Senior lecturer in the year 2010. She completed her Doctoral programme in Medical Microbiology under University of Madras in the year 2012. Dr. K.Padmavathy, Ph.D., is presently working as Professor in the Department of Microbiology with 13 years of teaching and 4 years of research experience.

Dr. V. Naveen Kumar M.Sc., Ph.D, (Medical Microbiology) is a visiting Research scientist. He is a expertise in molecular biology, CRISPR, microbial genomics, bioinformatics, DNA sequencing and analysis, Human microbiome- metagenomics The teaching faculty of the Department of Microbiology is actively involved in research in collaboration with the faculty of dentistry in a truly interdisciplinary approach.
