History

The Time Line

1997 : First Batch of MDS commenced with 2 PGs

2000 : First Batch of MDS passed out

2002 : The department started functioning as under the domain of Bharath University

2007 : PG intake increased from 2 to 4 Nos/ Year

2012 : Established Implant Room

Transformation- Department of Prosthodontics

In 2018, our department was converted into an academic centre and clinic providing private practice like environment. The department is fully furnished with centrally air-conditioned post graduate clinics with 17 dental units for post-graduates with separate cabin for each post-graduate student, 37 for under-graduates and an air-conditioned implant room. We aim towards restoration of functional dental and oral tissues using aesthetic principles.

Academic Programmes

Undergraduate Training Programme

DCI Requirements:

The syllabus for undergraduate students is strictly followed according to the DCI protocol. Lessons/ Classes would be planned and staffs are allocated with their turns on specific days. Notes and useful study materials would be given to students on a regular basis. Mock tests are held to prepare them for final exams. Special care and attention would be given for those who do not perform well. They would be identified and given additional hours of coaching. Records and workbooks of all students are assessed and monitored routinely.

Highlights of the under graduate training programme are:

• Faculties are allotted Theory/Practical classes and clinicals.
• Multimedia Presentations are used extensively for theory classes. This helps in better understanding of the concepts and at the same time makes learning an enjoyable experience.
• There is a One to one interaction and discussions with the students during Practical classes and clinical postings.
• Practical demonstrations are given for various techniques and procedures like wire bending, acrylization etc.
• The department library has most of the latest Orthodontic books, Journals & Periodicals for ready reference.
• At periodic intervals there is Personal Counselling of students by senior staff members.

Soft Skill Development

• There are periodic lectures on self – development to keep the students spirits high and keen on learning.

Postgraduate Training Programme

• The Post Graduates are exposed to a vast number of clinical cases with various types of Dentofacial disorders.
• The training modules comprise of very basic to most advanced Prosthodontics Techniques and Mechanics.
• There is a lot of emphasis on maintenance of up to date records for each case.
• A comprehensive Library Dissertation (L.D.) has to be compiled and submitted to the Department before starting work on the Dissertations. The department has regular Multi-media Seminar Presentations, Journal Clubs and Case discussions. (3 days a week)
• The department maintains a state of the art record storage room with a vast collection of more than 800 finished cases, which are constantly used for research and training purposes.

Soft Skill Development

• All PGs are trained in taking Seminars and Journal club discussions. It teaches them to research in depth about any particular topic.

OWNERSHIP SKILLS

Each PG is given an individual cubicle, to develop a sense of Ownership and to personalize their workspace. It gives them an opportunity to get creative and enjoy their work.

TEAM SPIRIT

The Post - Graduates are teamed in Vertical Slot System, which encompasses one PG from every year. This further enables the freshers to get better oriented, as the seniors take them under their wings and guide the juniors.

INTER DEPARTMENTAL DISCUSSIONS

There are routine Clinical Society Meetings and Inter Departmental Discussion held frequently to enhance and explore the Inter Disciplinary treatment approaches.

Webinars by various renowned speakers were conducted in the online platform for the benefit of the students during the covid pandemic.

Covid Care

1.Basic Screening

All patients before undergoing initial assessment for periodontal treatment, are subjected to basic screening for COVID 19. Which includes hand sanitising, documenting patient’s temperature, SpO2 levels and mouthrinsing for patients.

Our care providers take up complete protective protocol during treatment

3.Scheduled appointments

To restrict aerosol procedures, patients are scheduled with adequate time intervals. Fumigation is effectively carried out after each procedure.

PARADIGM SHIFT IN DENTAL EDUCATION – A FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Faculty development programmes in Orthodontics concentrate on the various facets like upgradation of knowledge, honing of clinical skills, adopting new methodologies attributing to curriculum development, explore new arenas into research and import and promote Orthodontic education. A faculty development programme was conducted my Dr Sabarainathan on 11th January 2019 with primary focus on the current trends and advancements in teaching and in dental education.

Mastering Self Ligation And Class II Correction- State Workshop by Dr. Chetan V Jayade on 11th June, 2019

CLASS II CORRECTIONS

An intense one-day lecture series on self-ligation systems and class II correctors by Dr Chetan V Jayade was organized and conducted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in tandem with 3M on 11th June 2019. The programme had extensive participation from both faculty and students alike. The clinical acumen and content shared by Dr Jayade was highly commended.

ADVANCED DAMON IN COMBINATION WITH TAD’s

The Self Ligation appliance with its Gold standard as the Damon system has been able to live up to the expectations of both the clinicians and patients. Dr Abhishek Ghosh, a remarkable practitioner featured a fabulous lecture series on TADs and the Damom system. His evidence based Orthodontic results, implications of skill and innovation to achieve these results, references were exemplary. The delegates all had a wonderful learning experience.

Structured Reseacrh Methodology

A hands-on research methodology workshop was conducted on 21st January 2021, at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai organized by the Directorate of Research, Bharath University. It was a hybrid programme, one of its kind with both online and in person lectures by Dr Badri Thiruvenkatachari and Dr Steve Chadwick. Key highlights included a workshop on Writing a research protocol and Grant applications. The course was attended by faculties and postgraduate students of multiple disciplines across Medicine and Dentistry and was a grand success.
