The department of Oral Medicine envisages to be a pioneer in providing quality oral care, teaching and research involving the various diseases of the oral and maxillo facial complex.

Overview of the Department

All cases which report to the hospital are screened, in the department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, diagnosed and referred to other departments for appropriate treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of anomalies and diseases of the teeth, mouth, jaws and associated tissues are the main goals of this department. Cases of Oro Facial Pain, Mucosal lesions, Cysts, Benign, Malignant tumours of the jaw, TMJ & Salivary gland disorders are diagnosed, investigated and treated in the department of Oral Medicine Diagnosis & Radiology.

The potential thrust areas include

  • Oral Cancer
  • Oral Potentially malignant & malignant lesions
  • Dental management of medically compromised individuals
  • Geriatric oral care
  • Palliative oral care
  • Tobacco cessation counselling
  • Advanced diagnostic aids such as Ultrasound, CT, CBCT, MRI

The students are taught the required clinical skills in the diagnosis & treatment of various oral lesions. They also get trained in laser excision of soft tissue lesions , non surgical management of Temporo mandibular disorders by therapeutic Ultrasound & Advanced diagnostic aids such as Computerised Tomography, Cone Beam Computerised Tomography, Radiovisuography, Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Infrastructure

The Department of Oral Medicine is wi-fi enabled and has a separate UG Clinic & PG Clinic with 22 electronically operated chairs. The Radiology Department is AERB certified and has 1 Cone Beam Computed Tomography,1 Digital Ortho Pantomography, and 3 Intra Oral xray Machines. The department also has other special equipments such as Therapeutic Ultrasound, Soft Tissue Laser, RadioVisio Graphy-PSP Imaging.The Departmental library is also well equipped with 113 books and also has facility for e-Journals

History

UG programme was started in 1989 with intake of 100 admissions per year.

The third, final year BDS students & CRRI’s are taught to sharpen their clinical skills in the diagnosis & treatment of various common oral lesions, to enable them to become competent professionals later.

PG programme was started in 2007 with an intake of 3 PG’s per year. Duration – 3 years.

PhD programme was started in 2019.

Academic Programmes

Under Graduate Programme & Curriculum

The UG programme is run according to the guidelines & curriculum given by the Dental Council of India.

Students are posted during 3rd B.D.S, 4th B.D.S & Internship in their undergraduate programme (100 students per year). The department also runs a post- graduate programme with intake of 3 PG’S per year. Students are trained to record a detailed history, examine the patients and formulate a differential diagnosis. The faculty guides the students in all their academic endeavours. The students are also trained in taking intraoral radiographs and interpreting them.

The graduate acquires the following during the period of training.

  • Adequate knowledge of the scientific foundation on which dentistry is based and good understanding of various relevant scientific method, principles of biological functions; ability to evaluate and analyze scientifically various established facts and data.
  • Adequate knowledge of the development, structure and function of the teeth, mouth and jaws and associated tissues both in health and disease and their relationship and effect on general state of health and also bring on physical and social well being of the patient.
  • Adequate knowledge of clinical disciplines and method which provide a coherent picture of anomalies, lesions and diseases of the teeth, mouth and jaws and preventive diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of dentistry.
  • Adequate clinical experience required for general dental practice.
  • Adequate knowledge of the constitution, biological function and behavior of persons in health and sickness as well as the influence of the natural social environment on the state of general health and oral health.
  • Diagnose and manage various common dental problems encountered in general dental practice keeping in mind the expectations and right of the society to receive the best possible treatment available wherever possible.
  • Carry out certain investigative procedures and ability to interpret laboratory findings, radiographs. Promote oral health and help preventing oral diseases wherever possible.
  • Control pain and anxiety among the patients during dental treatment.

Practicals / Clinicals Work Manual for 3rd Year:

  • Students are trained on the basics of etiology, progression & treatment of Dental caries ,Periodontal disease, Malocclusion, Oral Cancer, Dental Fluorosis and TMJ Disorders. Student are trained to arrive at proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the orofacial region. Training is also imparted in disease management wherever possible, salivary diagnostic procedures, various radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.

The following are the minimum of prescribed work for recording during posting

  • Getting used to the radiographical equipments, Dark room , processing procedures,
  • Handling the IOPA x-ray machines & Training students to take full mouth periapical IOPA.

Practicals / Clinicals Work Manual for 4th Year:

  • Students are trained to arrive at proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the orofacial region.
  • Training is also imparted in management of various salivary diagnostic procedures, various radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.be evaluated for marks at the time of university examination.
  • During the clinical postings, students are required to attend chairside viva, present a seminar using multi- media projector on the topic allotted. Students are also expected to complete assignment of case history recording, clinical problem-based exercises and radiological exercises and submit to the department at the end of the postings. Three session examinations will be conducted in the subject before University examination. End posting clinical examination will also be held for internal assessment.
  • Careful record of work done during the course of study should be maintained meticulously which would be the base for assessment of practical/clinical work for the candidates before recommending for exams.The following are the minimum of prescribed work for recording during posting
  • Recording of detailed case histories of interesting cases-10
  • Intra-oral radiographs (Periapical, bitewing, occlusal) -10
  • Laboratory diagnostic routine procedure.

Activities of Interns ( Cri)

The Compulsory Rotatory Dental Internship shall include training in Oral Medicine & Radiology for a period of one month.

Goals: To facilitate achievement of basic skills and attitudes the following facilities are provided to all dental graduates:

  • Competent to diagnose and manage common oral mucosal diseases and disorders in patients of all ages.
  • Competent at counselling patients regarding the nature and severity of non-life threatening oral mucosal diseases and disorders, providing the patient with realistic options and expectations of management.
  • Competent at performing limited soft tissue diagnostic procedures.
  • Able to identify and understand oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
  • Competent to participate in the diagnosis and proper referral of the patient with life- threatening oral mucosal diseases.
  • Competent at managing acute oral infections, including patient referral and prescription of appropriate drugs.
  • Familiar with the treatment of common oral medical lesions disorders, both medical and surgical.
  • Have knowledge concerning the effects of tobacco on the oral mucosa and ways in which to help patients who wish to stop using tobacco.

The following are the minimum prescribed work for recording during posting:

  1. Examination of patients minimum 25 cases
  2. Exposure to clinical, pathological laboratory procedures and biopsies
  3. Effective training in taking of Radiographs full month (Intra-oral) I.O.

3rd year

During the MDS course the student should attend two National Conferences and attempts should be made to present at least two scientific papers and publish at least two scientific articles in an indexed journal relevant to the speciality. The student is expected to maintain a detailed log book of work done on each day of his/her MDS course and should produce it for evaluation on the day of Practical/Clinical Examination.

Requirements to be met by the candidate to appear for Part II examination

  1. The candidate should have successfully passed the part I examination.
  2. The candidate should have completed three years training course with a minimum of 80% attendance each year of the course at the time of appearing for the examination.
  3. Selection of topic for dissertation should be done within 9 months of the first year and the completed dissertation should be submitted to Bharath University six months before the proposed date of examination.
  4. Should have attended 15 days posting in the following departments.
    1. Dermatology and Venereal disease
    2. General Radiology
    3. Radiation Oncology / Imageoloy
    4. General Medicine.
  5. Produce a clinical record with photographs and investigation reports of 15 cases of interest.
  6. Produce a record of radiographs of different radiographic techniques
  7. Should have undertaken treatment and follow up study of 10 patients with chronic mucosal lesions.
  8. Should have attended and presented a paper at state/national conference.
  9. Should have at least two publications.
  10. Should have 10 hours of undergraduate teaching experience.
  11. Should present a compilation of a minimum of 15 seminars,15 journal clubs over the course of three years.
  12. All records and accounts of work performed by the candidate shall be assessed and approved by the guide for the postgraduate programme.

An intense one-day lecture series on self-ligation systems and class II correctors by Dr Chetan V Jayade was organized and conducted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in tandem with 3M on 11th June 2019. The programme had extensive participation from both faculty and students alike. The clinical acumen and content shared by Dr Jayade was highly commended.

The Self Ligation appliance with its Gold standard as the Damon system has been able to live up to the expectations of both the clinicians and patients. Dr Abhishek Ghosh, a remarkable practitioner featured a fabulous lecture series on TADs and the Damom system. His evidence based Orthodontic results, implications of skill and innovation to achieve these results, references were exemplary. The delegates all had a wonderful learning experience.

Structured Reseacrh Methodology

A hands-on research methodology workshop was conducted on 21st January 2021, at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai organized by the Directorate of Research, Bharath University. It was a hybrid programme, one of its kind with both online and in person lectures by Dr Badri Thiruvenkatachari and Dr Steve Chadwick. Key highlights included a workshop on Writing a research protocol and Grant applications. The course was attended by faculties and postgraduate students of multiple disciplines across Medicine and Dentistry and was a grand success.
