Academic Programmes



UnderGraduate Programme and Curriculum



The UG programme is run according to the guidelines and curriculum given by the Dental Council of India.


Students are posted for 3rd B.D.S, 4th B.D.S and Internship in their undergraduate programme (100 students per year). The department also runs a post-graduate programme with an intake of 3 PG’S per year. Students are trained to record a detailed history, examine the patients and formulate a different diagnosis. The faculty guides the students in all their academic endeavours. The students are also trained in taking intraoral radiographs and interpreting them.

The graduate acquires the following during the period of training.

  • Adequate knowledge of the scientific foundation on which dentistry is based and good understanding of various relevant scientific method, principles of biological functions; ability to evaluate and analyze scientifically various established facts and data.
  • Adequate knowledge of the development, structure and function of the teeth, mouth and jaws and associated tissues both in health and disease and their relationship and effect on the general state of health also brings on the physical and social well being of the patient.
  • Adequate knowledge of clinical disciplines and method which provide a coherent picture of anomalies, lesions and diseases of the teeth, mouth and jaws and preventive diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of dentistry.
  • Adequate clinical experience is required for general dental practice.
  • Adequate knowledge of the constitution, biological function and behavior of persons in health and sickness as well as the influence of the natural social environment on the state of general health and oral health.
  • Diagnose and manage various common dental problems encountered in general dental practice, keeping in mind the expectations and right of the society to receive the best possible treatment available wherever possible.
  • Carry out certain investigative procedures and ability to interpret laboratory findings, radiographs. Promote oral health and help preventing oral diseases wherever possible.
  • Control pain and anxiety among the patients during dental treatment.

1st YEAR

  • Guiding Third year BDS students during their clinical posting.
  • Taking lectures for BDS students on selected topics-10hours.

3rd YEAR

PRACTICALS / CLINICALS WORK MANUAL FOR 3rd YEAR:


Students are trained on the basics of etiology, progression & treatment of Dental caries, Periodontal disease, Malocclusion, Oral Cancer, Dental Fluorosis and TMJ Disorders. Students are trained to arrive at a proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the orofacial region. Training is also imparted in disease management wherever possible, salivary diagnostic procedures, various radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.


The following are the minimum of prescribed work for recording during posting
  • Getting used to radiographical equipment, dark room , processing procedures
  • Handling the IOPA x-ray machines & training students to take full mouth periapical IOPA.


PRACTICALS / CLINICALS WORK MANUAL FOR 4th YEAR:


  • Students are trained to arrive at a proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the orofacial region.
  • Training is also imparted in the management of various salivary diagnostic procedures, various radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.be evaluated for marks at the time of university examination.
  • During the clinical postings, students are required to attend chairside viva, present a seminar using and a multi-media projector on the topic allotted. Students are also expected to complete assignments of case history recording, clinical problem-based exercises and radiological exercises and submit to the department at the end of the postings. Three-session examinations will be conducted on the subject before the university examination. End posting clinical examination will also be held for internal assessment.
  • Careful record of work done during the course of study should be maintained meticulously, which would be the basis for assessment of practical/clinical work for the candidates before recommending exams. The following is the minimum of prescribed work for recording during posting.
  • Recording of detailed case histories of interesting cases-10
  • Intra-oral radiographs (Periapical, bitewing, occlusal) -10
  • Laboratory diagnostic is routine procedures.


Activities of Interns ( Cri)

  • The Compulsory Rotatory Dental Internship shall include training in Oral Medicine & Radiology for a period of one month.
  • Goals: To facilitate achievement of basic skills and attitudes the following facilities are provided to all dental graduates:
  • Competent to diagnose and manage common oral mucosal diseases and disorders in patients of all ages.
  • Competent at counselling patients regarding the nature and severity of non-life threatening oral mucosal diseases and disorders, providing the patient with realistic options and expectations of management.
  • Competent at performing limited soft tissue diagnostic procedures.
  • Able to identify and understand oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
  • Competent to participate in the diagnosis and proper referral of the patient with life- threatening oral mucosal diseases.
  • Competent at managing acute oral infections, including patient referral and prescription of appropriate drugs.
  • Familiar with the treatment of common oral medical lesions disorders, both medical and surgical..
  • Have knowledge concerning the effects of tobacco on the oral mucosa and ways in which to help patients who wish to stop using tobacco..
    • The following are the minimum prescribed work for recording during posting:
  • Examination of patients minimum 25 cases.
  • Exposure to clinical, pathological laboratory procedures and biopsies
  • Effective training in taking of Radiographs full month (Intra-oral) I.O.

During the MDS course


During the MDS course, the student should attend two National Conferences and attempts should be made to present at least two scientific papers and publish at least two scientific articles in an indexed journal relevant to the speciality. The student is expected to keep a detailed log book of work done on each day of his/her MDS course and should produce it for evaluation on the day of Practical/Clinical Examination.

Requirements to be met by the candidate to appear for Part II examination


  • The candidate should have successfully passed the part I examination.
  • The candidate should have completed a three-year training course with a minimum of 80% attendance each year of the course at the time of appearing for the examination.
  • Selection of topic for dissertation should be done within 9 months of the first year and the completed dissertation should be submitted to Bharath University six months before the proposed date of examination.
  • Produce a clinical record with photographs and investigation reports of 15 cases of interest.
  • Produce a record of radiographs of different radiographic techniques.
  • Should have undertaken treatment and follow up study of 10 patients with chronic mucosal lesions.
  • Should have attended and presented a paper at state/national conference..
  • Should have at least two publications.
  • Should have 10 hours of undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Should present a compilation of a minimum of 15 seminars and15 journal clubs over the course of three years.
  • All records and accounts of work performed by the candidate shall be assessed and approved by the guide for the postgraduate programme. .
  • Should have attended 15 days posting in the following departments.
  • 1. Dermatology and Venereal disease
  • 2. General Radiology
  • 3. Radiation Oncology / Imageology
  • 4. General Medicine.
