Vision and Mission

Vision

The Department of Periodontics offers comprehensive didactic and clinical instruction in the field of Periodontology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally, we extend our educational offerings to practicing dentists through continuing dental education courses. Our instructional approach is tailored to accommodate the varying levels of competency exhibited by students.

In our clinical instruction, we cover a wide range of topics including periodontal examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, case presentation, communication, and various therapies. We emphasize outcome assessments for periodontal pathologies and implant therapy, addressing the needs of both healthy individuals and those with medical complications.

The didactic instruction provided encompasses an in-depth understanding of the normal periodontium at macro and microscopic levels. We explore periodontal pathology, including intra-oral lesions associated with periodontal conditions, as well as periodontal microbiology and immunology. Our curriculum also covers pain control, pharmacology relevant to periodontal treatments, cell biology, wound healing (including periodontal regeneration), minimally invasive surgical procedures, dental implantology, case management, and epidemiology and statistics specific to Periodontology.

Research methodology forms a crucial part of our educational program, equipping students with the necessary tools and skills to engage in research endeavors. Our faculty members actively participate in both basic and applied sciences research, providing invaluable instruction and guidance to students in their research pursuits. Current research areas include the study of cellular and humoral immunity in periodontal disease, the microbiology of periodontal infections, periodontal regeneration, implant procedures and outcome assessments, periodontal diagnostics, infections within the periodontium, epidemiology, proteomics & genomics, the influence of COVID-19, and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
