HOD's Message
Welcome to the General Pathology Department of Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, one of the Premier Dental Institutions. Oral and maxillofacial pathology is an exciting area of dentistry that is rapidly expanding due to the high demand for additional academic research in this scientific arena. The program is designed toward students who want to not only be successful human beings, but also to be recognised as leaders in the field of dentistry, as well as play an important role in the socioeconomic system.
We are particularly interested in teaching, diagnosis, research, and community service. Our staff members are enthusiastic and work hard to instil the young generation's interest in the subject. Our department teaches Dental Anatomy, Oral Histology, Oral Pathology, and Microbiology to 180 undergraduate students in the I, II, and III BDS programmes.
The faculty engages in a series of discussions with the students on a variety of subjects, allowing them to communicate and shape their thought process. We have a student mentoring programme in place to ensure that we bring out the best of all of our students.
The faculty has given numerous presentations at national and international forums, both in India and abroad; they have numerous publications in national and international journals; we serve on various journal review boards; and we are committed teachers with a scientific bent of mind who are always willing to support our students. Students and faculty have brought honour to our esteemed institution and expect to do so even more in the coming years.

History
Oral & Maxillofacial pathology & Microbiology is a synthesis of basic science and clinical dentistry.Oral pathology is a science that attempts to associate human biology with the sings and symptoms of human disease.
The department of oral & Maxillofacial pathology is situated on the first floor of Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital.
The department has a functional laboratory for undergraduate student,a lecture room for post graduate and undergraduate students,a museum showing showing various specimens of Dental Anatomy and Oral pathology,as a departmental library, research room, and histopathology lab.
The histopathological lab is well-equipped for normal and special staining procedures, and it has a semi-automatic microtome and an automatic tissue processor. In addition to our histopathology department ,We have a fully equppied clinical laboratory for routine and advanced laboratory investigations. Our research lab is equipped with a research microscope, polarising adapter, phase contrast dark field illuminations attachments, a good photomicrography setup, and image analyzer software .The department has a penta head microscope that is used for postgraduate and undrgraduate teaching and discussion.
The Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology &Oral Microbiology laboratory accepts biopsy and surgical tissue specimens from other dental departments for histopathoogical examinations and diagnosis.Routine heamatological invsestigations, punch biopsies, fine needle aspiration cytology, and exfoliative cytology are among the diagnostics procedures we perform. The department has an immunohistochemistry
Laboratory, a Microbiological laboratory, and a seperate special stain lab for post graduate students. The department also act as a resource for research projects carried out by other post graduate students and faculty members at the college. We have a fully functioning and well-equipped COCPAR-Oral precancer/cancer detection centre where qualified dental staff scan for precancerous/cancerous lesions.
Academic Programmes
Under Graduate Programme
FIRST BDS:Didactic lectures and practical presentations are used to teach the first BDS, Basics of Oral and Maxollofacial Tissues and structures .The teachers to students ratio is 1:16, and each student is assinged a tutor .Per week ,there are three hours of lectures and eight hours of practicals.Charts and models ,simple oral histology slides, tooth models, natural tooth specimens and casts of decidious ,transient ,and permanent dentition ,embryological specimens in the museum, and a departmental library for reference books are among the exclusive study materials offered.Tooth carvings in wax are part of the daily functional hours for studying natural tooth morphology .They are also taught how to prepare ground bits, which will be used to train them in forensic dentistry .At the end of each session ,regular evaluation tests are given seminars are held.
SECOND BDS:Students are taught exclusively the microbiological basis of disease, with a focus on modern forensic techniches .Didactic lectures and practical presentations are offered ,with a special tutor assinged to each other.
THIRD BDS:Developmental ,reactive ,neoplastic, and systemic head and neck pathologies are taught through three hours of lectures and two hours of practical demonstrations each week.
INTERNS: Eligible BDS graduates who intern in the department receive training in basic cytological and haematological investigations such as Exfoliative cytology and vital staining. Biopsy preparation is given in collaboration with the oral surgery department. They also take part in dental camps for mass screenings for oral precancer and cancer.
Postgraduate Programme (MDS)
A postgraduate course in oral pathology and microbiology requires fine training of the student in order to achieve higher competence in dealing with oral and maxillofacial diseases, their course, and consequences. As part of their curriculum, they conduct regular cytological, haematological, histopathological, biochemical, and molecular techniques. They also participate in research programmes. They are shown in cancer institutes and medical colleges for maximum visibility.
Innovative courses
The aim of the courses is to provide dentist with a professional qualifications that delivers core knowledge, experience and intellectual skills in forensic odontology, oral oncology and oral cytology. These programs will enable graduates to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in these areas and in research.

Covid Care
1.Basic Screening
All patients before undergoing initial assessment for periodontal treatment, are subjected to basic screening for COVID 19. Which includes hand sanitising, documenting patient’s temperature, SpO2 levels and mouthrinsing for patients.
2.Work safe, stay safe
Our care providers take up complete protective protocol during treatment
3.Scheduled appointments
To restrict aerosol procedures, patients are scheduled with adequate time intervals. Fumigation is effectively carried out after each procedure.

Best Practices
Best Practices and Innovation
Education through texting is the preferred method of communication for today’s students. Being an easy way of communicating and spreading knowledge among students and faculties we have opted this method of practice. Initially we started this by sending texts comprising each disease/lesion every day through SMS. Recently we have modified this practice by sending contents through Whats App.
By this innovation we are also able to share clinical and radiographic images.
Google class room is an innovative, easy and paper free mode of learning for students by grading, alloting assignments and also for one on one discussions.
This system has been recently implemented in the department of oral pathology for undergraduates as well as postgraduates students. students can be invited to class through institutional database, private code or respective department mail id.
Teachers can monitor the progress of the ward and can send written comments to individual students based on their performance, which make them improve on their academic activities. The students can be given in advance the PowerPoint presentations for the forthcoming class which helps in better understanding.
After the implementation the response is extremely good from the students.
As the present days students are well versed with the developing technology and skills implementing this way of teaching makes more interesting, time saving and a better way of assessing students.
State your diagnosis is an innovative practise which we follow for undergraduate students. A photograph along with the clinical features will be displayed in the department notice board. The diagnosis of the given image shall be written on the notice board in the space provided along with the student's name and the year of study. The students coming out with correct diagnosis will be rewarded. This method encourages the students and also develops interest towards the subject.
