MOU RELATED ACTIVITY: Workshop on Fabrication of Porcelain Fused with Metal (PFM) crowns

REPORT OF THE ACTIVITY

PFM crowns are among the most popular and have been considered the gold standard for the repair of damaged teeth. PFM crown is a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, consisting of a metal substructure in a cap shape (made to fit perfectly over the patient's tooth) with a porcelain coating.
PFM crowns have good mechanical properties, satisfactory esthetic results, and an acceptable biological quality needed for periodontal health. This crown can also be used to restore teeth with multiple defective axial surfaces. It provides a very good retention and can be done almost in every situation.
This prompted us to organise a workshop titled “Fabrication of PFM crowns” in association with Classic Dental Labs. The workshop was held at Classic Dental Labs, Chennai on 12th of June 2017 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
A total of 7 students participated in the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to enlighten students with the various clinical and laboratory steps involved to fabricate Porcelain fused crowns right from tooth preparation till cementation method. Various steps involved in casting were explained elaborately. The students also got an opportunity to perform all the steps on their own.
The quality of the discussion and deliberation was high, and the participants’ interventions and questions increased the quality, comprehension, and understanding of the subject discussion. The participants came up with a number of suggestions and ideas. The students found the workshop extremely useful, as it explained all of their questions about the fabrication of porcelain fused crowns, making the workshop a major success.
