World No Tobacco Day was observed at Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Pallikaranai in congruence with the WHO theme for 2024 "Protecting children from Tobacco Industry interference". Welcome address was given by Prof. Dr. M.S. Kannan, Dean, SBDCH, emphasized on harmful effects of tobacco on oral and general health. Registrar of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) Prof. Dr. Bhuminathan S addressed the gathering and spoke about consequences of second hand and third hand smoking.Chief Guest for the event was DGP (Retd.) Dr.C.Sylendrababu IPS. He is a man with great passion for social causes and a great inspiration for youth. On this occasion he delivered an oration on the importance of celebrating this day.Following this, Prof. Dr. Anita M, Director of SBDCH Anti Tobacco Campaign provided a report on the various events conducted as part of the various the month long program implemented by the institution. Comprehensive anti tobacco eradication measures were observed covering pregnant women, special children, school children and Youth of both urban and rural areas and of all socio economic status.
This was followed by a Cycle Rally flagged off by the Chief Guest which culminated in a grand event with flash mob, street plays, interactive games, pamplet distribution etc. to engage the public and educate them regarding ill effects of both smoking and smokeless tobacco usage. Final year student Mr.Leslie Thomas was dressed as Yema Dharmaraja, and interacted with the participants. The Staff of Public Health Dentistry department and Student Committee Members were honoured by the dignitaries.
