In an impactful effort to combat the growing menace of tobacco use, the Department of Public Health Dentistry from Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital organized a public Anti-Tobacco Awareness Program at City Center Mall on May 25, 2025. The event, conducted ahead of World No Tobacco Day, aimed to educate people about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption, especially its impact on oral and general health. With a focus on engaging the community, the program targeted mall visitors from all age groups and emphasized the importance of quitting tobacco for a healthier future

The event featured several interactive and educational activities. Information booths with charts, posters, and leaflets depicted the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco. A free oral screening camp was set up where dental professionals examined over 200 individuals for signs of tobacco-related oral conditions like leukoplakia, gum diseases, and early signs of oral cancer. Personal counseling sessions were also offered by trained postgraduate students, guiding people through the process of tobacco cessation and introducing them to helpful aids like nicotine patches and gums.

The campaign received a warm response from the public. Several tobacco users showed genuine interest in quitting and registered for follow-up counseling at the dental college. The program not only spread awareness but also provided practical tools and motivation for behavior change. It was widely shared on social media, with the hashtag #QuitTobaccoWith Balaji Dental gaining traction and further amplifying its reach.

Overall, the Anti-Tobacco Awareness Program served as a shining example of community outreach by a dental institution. It demonstrated how dental professionals can play a vital role in preventive healthcare by addressing one of the leading causes of oral diseases. Encouraged by the event’s success, the college plans to conduct similar awareness drives in schools, parks, and other public spaces to build a tobacco-free society.
