In a unique and socially conscious initiative, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital organized an Anti-Tobacco Awareness Program at the Central Public Bus Stop on May 22, 2025. As part of a broader campaign in the lead-up to World No Tobacco Day, the event aimed to reach people from all walks of life—particularly daily commuters, workers, and youth—through a direct, on-the-ground awareness effort. Unlike conventional health seminars that are often held in enclosed spaces with limited reach, this campaign took place in a bustling public setting, making the message more accessible, visible, and relatable to the masses. With the footfall at the bus stop ranging in thousands daily, the location was strategically chosen to ensure high visibility and maximum impact.
The core objective of the program was to educate the general public about the dangers of tobacco consumption, especially its association with oral cancer, respiratory illness, cardiovascular diseases, and reduced quality of life. Dental professionals are often among the first to detect signs of tobacco-induced oral lesions, making them key stakeholders in anti-tobacco advocacy. Keeping this in mind, the event was led by a team of dental faculty members, postgraduate students, and interns, all equipped to offer both information and clinical support to individuals ready to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The Anti-Tobacco Awareness Program at the public bus stop stood out not only for its setting but also for its grassroots-level impact. It broke the barriers of accessibility by bringing health education directly to the people—many of whom belong to lower-income groups and may not have the time or resources to attend awareness sessions in traditional venues. The informal environment allowed for more relaxed interactions, helping individuals to open up about their tobacco use without fear of stigma or judgment. By meeting people where they are—in their everyday spaces—the campaign made its message more powerful and immediate. The event was widely appreciated by the public and even received local media coverage, which further amplified its reach.
