Vision & Mission

Is to impart knowledge in the pathogenic role of microorganisms in infectious diseases and in dentistry. The faculties of the department are striving hard to emphasize on the importance of surveillance and infection control strategies.

MISSION

It gives me immense pleasure to lead the Department of Microbiology of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital. Our department is struggling hard towards its vision and mission to achieve excellence in quality education with high standards in teaching and research. The sincere efforts of the faculties are very well reflected in the awards received and the articles published in high impact journals.
I feel happy and delighted to inform that we have initiated “The Research Committee” and “The Institutional Ethics committee” which is registered under DCGI in the year 2015. Our faculty members are dedicated in research work who finds ways to work across disciplines. Our Department faculty play a key role in the functioning of “Research Lab for Oral and Systemic Health”. We have provided industrial/research consultancies for the enterprises/post graduate students of other universities, a big credit to our department.
I am pleased to inform that our faculty are invited by other Universities and Educational Institutes to deliver Invited Lectures in International and National conferences. Our faculty are also actively involved in social activities related to Social Awareness on “Infectious Disease outbreaks” & “The Need for Personal hygiene”.
The goal of our department is to provide quality education. The process of learning is extremely important in life for the students, besides career. We believe in holistic development of the student. The excellent infrastructure, teaching faculty of the best kind along with best practices ensures a bright future for the students. The staffs regularly interact with the students and parents. We are confident that our students will emerge as assets not only to this institution and to any organization they belong, and ultimately to our nation at large.

The Department occupies a 4000 sq.feet area on the third floor of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Bharath University. The department comprises a sterilization room, culture – media preparation room. Bacteriology and Mycology laboratory with laminar air flow and inoculation hood facility.

History

2. History of the Department

The department was initiated in the year 1989. In the year 1992 Dr. Ramalingam, M.D (Microbiology), a senior faculty from Stanley Medical College and hospital with 21 years of teaching experience in government medical colleges Joined as Professor and Head of Microbiology Department and is still serving the institute as Professor Emeritus.
Mrs. K. Mahalakshmi M.Sc., (Medical Microbiology) joined as lecturer in this department in September 1993 and is still serving the institute. In the year 2006 as a faculty improvement programme of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, she was permitted to enroll for her Doctoral programme.
Dr. K. Mahalakshmi was awarded Ph.D., in Medical Microbiology in the year 2012 by University of Madras. With 30 years of teaching experience Professor Dr. K. Mahalakshmi, Ph.D., is presently heading the Department of Microbiology.
Mrs. K.Padmavathy M.Sc., (Medical Microbiology) M.Phil, joined as Senior lecturer in the year 2010. She completed her Doctoral programme in Medical Microbiology under University of Madras in the year 2012. Dr. K.Padmavathy, Ph.D., is presently working as Professor in the Department of Microbiology with 13 years of teaching and 4 years of research experience.
Dr. V. Naveen Kumar M.Sc., Ph.D, (Medical Microbiology) is a visiting Research scientist. He is a expertise in molecular biology, CRISPR, microbial genomics, bioinformatics, DNA sequencing and analysis, Human microbiome- metagenomics The teaching faculty of the Department of Microbiology is actively involved in research in collaboration with the faculty of dentistry in a truly interdisciplinary approach.

Academic Programmes

PG ProgramsUnder Graduate Programme & Curriculum

The subject Microbiology is taught in the II BDS year. The syllabus is formulated in such a way to introduce the role of microorganisms in infectious diseases. The curriculum in Microbiology also covers the fundamental aspects of General Microbiology, Immunology, Systematic Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parasitology and Diagnostic Medical Microbiology.
The curriculum further enriches the knowledge in Emerging and Re-emerging infections, the development of new vaccines, drugs and Biotechnology. Students are coached with visual-aids and power point teaching. Students are engaged to give seminars on the current topics in Microbiology related to dentistry. Group discussions are periodically conducted to gain knowledge in Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology.

POST Graduate Programme & Curriculum

The Post-Graduate program was started in the year 1999. This subject is taught in the MDS 1st year to refresh their knowledge in the different aspects of Microbiology (Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parasitology and Molecular Microbiology).
The faculties of the Microbiology Department play a vital role in motivating and guiding the post graduate students of various dental disciplines in research. The faculties also contribute in the publication of their research work in International/ National, peer reviewed journals indexed in pubmed, medline and scopus. The faculties of the department encourage and guide the post graduate students to participate in various international and national seminars and conferences.

03 June 2020 Scientific Writing and Publication Skills-A Stepping Stone to Research” on 9th January, 2019 Perceiving the importance of writing research proposals to International and National funding agencies and publication ethics, a one day Seminar on “Scientific Writing and Publication Skills-A Stepping Stone to Research” was organized by the Departments of Basic Medical sciences, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, BIHER, 9th January 2019 at the Lakshmi Ammal Auditorium, Sree Balaji Dental College Hospital, Chennai. The one day Seminar was coordinated by Prof. Dr. P. Jayamathi, Organizing Chairman, Dr. G. Sumathy, Organizing Co-chairman and Dr. K. Padmavathy, as the Organizing Secretary. The seminar was inaugurated by the Guest of Honor Dr. V. Kanagasabai, M.D., M.B.A., Vice Chancellor, BIHER and Dr. Ragavendra Jayesh, Principal, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai.
03 June 2020 This one day seminar was an eyeopener for the young researchers and academicians on the overall aspect of academic publishing highlighting the best practices in publication ethics. The delegates were trained to conduct plagiarism checks and to interpret plagiarism reports. The academic meet received an overwhelming response of nearly 125 delegates from academia, clinicians and young researchers. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai was accredited this One day seminar with 5 credit points.

The Webinar on "SARS-CoV-2 - Facts and Diagnosis" was organized by the Department of Microbiology, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital during the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 mainly for gaining knowledge in the aspect of its diagnosis and spread. Dr. V. Naveen Kumar, Research Associate, Dept of Microbiology, SBDCH/ Founder and Director of ImmuGenix Biosciences (IGB) Pvt Ltd, a Chennai was the speaker for this webinar. He is a Medical Microbiologist, has more than 10 years of experience in Molecular Microbiology, Immunology and Bioinformatics. His lecture was very well acknowledged and appreciated by the participants. The session was very lively with more than one hour of scientific deliberation. We had more than 350 registrations from India and abroad.

Sensing the increasing importance of Nosocomial infections- prevention, control, and treatment, a one day Seminar on “Asepsis, Infection control & Bio-Medical Waste Management” was conducted by the Department of Microbiology on Thursday, 27th June 2019 at the Lakshmi Ammal Auditorium, Sree Balaji Dental College Hospital, Chennai.

The conference was embarked with an inauguration ceremony with the Guest of Honor, Dr. Uma Sekar, Professor & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital & Research Institute flanked by Dr. V. Kanagasabai, M.D., M.B.A., Vice Chancellor, Dr. S. Bhuminathan, Registrar, Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research, Dr. Ragavendra Jayesh, Principal, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai. Dr. Sai Prasad, Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was also present in this occasion.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. Uma Sekar, Professor & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital & Research Institute delivered the inaugural address followed by the Keynote address by Dr. V. Kanagasabai, Vice Chancellor, BIHER, Chennai and lectures by Dr. Sai Prasad, Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board elaborated the need for segregation and disposal of Bio-Medical Waste in Hospital settings. Microbiologist, Prof. Dr. K. Mahalakshmi emphasized the need and mode of Cross Infection Control in dental settings. This One Day Seminar was an attempt to address some of the issues involved in the segregation of biomedical waste at source, collection and disposal of biomedical waste, prevention of cross infections and their control strategies.
The pragmatic meet received an overwhelming response from the experts from academia, clinicians and young dental student community. This One day seminar was accredited with 5 credit points by the Tamil Nadu Dental Council.
The One day Seminar was a successful gathering of eminent speakers from reputed organizations and their paramount talks enlightened the delegates. The seminar provided a platform where experts from Government and Private Health Care settings shared their knowledge and experiences on the following topics:

Perceiving the importance of writing research proposals to International and National funding agencies and publication ethics, a one day Seminar on “Scientific Writing and Publication Skills-A Stepping Stone to Research” was organized by the Departments of Basic Medical sciences, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, BIHER, 9th January 2019 at the Lakshmi Ammal Auditorium, Sree Balaji Dental College Hospital, Chennai.
The one day Seminar was coordinated by Prof. Dr. P. Jayamathi, Organizing Chairman, Dr. G. Sumathy, Organizing Co-chairman and Dr. K. Padmavathy, as the Organizing Secretary. Dr. T. Hemalatha currently serving as a DST – Women Scientist (WOS-A) (In Biological Materials Laboratory, CSIR – CLRI) and the Principal Investigator of a DST Project on “Dual acting methotrexate conjugated oleyl chitosan coated iron oxide/gold hybrid nanobiocomposites for lung cancer imaging (MRI and CT) and therapy” elaborated on the art of thesis writing to the Post Graduates. Her talk was on “ How to write a thesis? A step by step approach".
Dr. S. Kalpana, Senior Research Officer, Department of Epidemiology, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and the Principal Investigator of research projects funded by INCLEN highlted on “Funding research – Approaches & Difficulties. Her outstanding oration on the ethics and art of writing research proposals to International and National funding agencies was widely received by the young researches from various academic institutions.
Dr. E. M. Shankar, currently the Dean, School of Biological sciences, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur, India delivered a lecture on “Mastering the art of high impact writing in biomedical journals. Dr. E M Shankar having more than 106 research publications in national and international journals and the Associate Editor and Academic Editor of various PubMed and Scopus indexed journals such as PlosOne, BMC Immunology, BMC Infectious Diseases, etc. highlighted the requirement for an ethics check on manuscripts before submission to restrain from subsequent journal rejection and/or retraction

An intense one-day lecture series on self-ligation systems and class II correctors by Dr Chetan V Jayade was organized and conducted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in tandem with 3M on 11th June 2019. Dr Abhishek Ghosh, a remarkable practitioner featured a fabulous lecture series on TADs and the Damom system. His evidence based Orthodontic results, implications of skill and innovation to achieve these results, references were exemplary. The delegates all had a wonderful learning experience.

Structured Reseacrh Methodology

A hands-on research methodology workshop was conducted on 21st January 2021, at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai organized by the Directorate of Research, Bharath University. It was a hybrid programme, one of its kind with both online and in person lectures by Dr Badri Thiruvenkatachari and Dr Steve Chadwick. Key highlights included a workshop on Writing a research protocol and Grant applications. The course was attended by faculties and postgraduate students of multiple disciplines across Medicine and Dentistry and was a grand success.
