Community Dentistry
Greetings from the Department of Microbiology, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai!
The Department of Public Health Dentistry strives to make the students complete oral physicians who can address problems from its root and believe in eradicating it completely. Oral health services are predominantly urban oriented. To overcome this issue and make all specialty services available to the rural population, the department has a holistic approach wherein the students are trained to address problems related to the rural population, by using health talks to address problems like personal hygiene, water conservation, air pollution etc. The students are also sensitized to approach the problems of the patient from a cultural context, and provide comprehensive treatment.
Since the inception of the department, a number of health programmes (treatment and check up camps) comprising of diagnosis, restorative treatment, exodontias, oral prophylaxis, oral health awareness, general health awareness etc. have been conducted.
Aims & Objectives:
• Oral and dental care delivery to the masses at their doorsteps – An institutionalized approach
• Orient students to the profession of dentistry, its development, and philosophies and to the activities related to community oral health promotion.
• Provide the student with principles and working details required for administering dental practice effectively.
• Create awareness about oral and dental health among members of the community through activities of community organisations and professional bodies. Make the student aware of the prevailing or changing socio-economic conditions.

The Department is involved in training undergraduate students in a holistic manner. Apart from lectures, exercises are designed to help the student understand the community aspects of dentistry. The students are required to submit a seminar on their allotted topics.

Webinar on "Writing a scientific paper: Tips for getting started" was organized on Oct 29, 2020. Dr. Vignesh Ramachandran, Senior Lecturer, Preclinical Department – Microbiology Discipline, Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKLRCMP), Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Malaysia was the resource person for the webinar.

The Webinar on "SARS-CoV-2 - Facts and Diagnosis" was organized by the Department of Microbiology, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital during the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 mainly for gaining knowledge in the aspect of its diagnosis and spread. Dr. V. Naveen Kumar, Research Associate, Dept of Microbiology, SBDCH/ Founder and Director of ImmuGenix Biosciences (IGB) Pvt Ltd, a Chennai was the speaker for this webinar. He is a Medical Microbiologist, has more than 10 years of experience in Molecular Microbiology, Immunology and Bioinformatics. His lecture was very well acknowledged and appreciated by the participants. The session was very lively with more than one hour of scientific deliberation. We had more than 350 registrations from India and abroad.
Sensing the increasing importance of Nosocomial infections- prevention, control, and treatment, a one day Seminar on “Asepsis, Infection control & Bio-Medical Waste Management” was conducted by the Department of Microbiology on Thursday, 27th June 2019 at the Lakshmi Ammal Auditorium, Sree Balaji Dental College Hospital, Chennai.
The conference was embarked with an inauguration ceremony with the Guest of Honor, Dr. Uma Sekar, Professor & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital & Research Institute flanked by Dr. V. Kanagasabai, M.D., M.B.A., Vice Chancellor, Dr. S. Bhuminathan, Registrar, Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research, Dr. Ragavendra Jayesh, Principal, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai. Dr. Sai Prasad, Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was also present in this occasion.
The Guest of Honor, Dr. Uma Sekar, Professor & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital & Research Institute delivered the inaugural address followed by the Keynote address by Dr. V. Kanagasabai, Vice Chancellor, BIHER, Chennai and lectures by Dr. Sai Prasad, Assistant Director of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board elaborated the need for segregation and disposal of Bio-Medical Waste in Hospital settings. Microbiologist, Prof. Dr. K. Mahalakshmi emphasized the need and mode of Cross Infection Control in dental settings. This One Day Seminar was an attempt to address some of the issues involved in the segregation of biomedical waste at source, collection and disposal of biomedical waste, prevention of cross infections and their control strategies.
The pragmatic meet received an overwhelming response from the experts from academia, clinicians and young dental student community. This One day seminar was accredited with 5 credit points by the Tamil Nadu Dental Council.
The One day Seminar was a successful gathering of eminent speakers from reputed organizations and their paramount talks enlightened the delegates. The seminar provided a platform where experts from Government and Private Health Care settings shared their knowledge and experiences on the following topics:
1. “Cross infection control in Hospital settings by ”Dr. Uma Sekar, Professor & Head, Dept of Microbiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai.
2. “Bio-medical waste management” by Dr. Sai Prasad, Assistant Director, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai.
3. “Infection Control in Dental Health Care settings” by Dr. K. Mahalakshmi, Professor & Head, Department of Microbiology, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, BIHER, Chennai.
One Day Seminar on “Scientific Writing and Publication Skills-A Stepping Stone to Research” on 9th January, 2019
Perceiving the importance of writing research proposals to International and National funding agencies and publication ethics, a one day Seminar on “Scientific Writing and Publication Skills-A Stepping Stone to Research” was organized by the Departments of Basic Medical sciences, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, BIHER, 9th January 2019 at the Lakshmi Ammal Auditorium, Sree Balaji Dental College Hospital, Chennai.
The one day Seminar was coordinated by Prof. Dr. P. Jayamathi, Organizing Chairman, Dr. G. Sumathy, Organizing Co-chairman and Dr. K. Padmavathy, as the Organizing Secretary. The seminar was inaugurated by the Guest of Honor Dr. V. Kanagasabai, M.D., M.B.A., Vice Chancellor, BIHER and Dr. Ragavendra Jayesh, Principal, Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Chennai.
Dr. T. Hemalatha currently serving as a DST – Women Scientist (WOS-A) (In Biological Materials Laboratory, CSIR – CLRI) and the Principal Investigator of a DST Project on “Dual acting methotrexate conjugated oleyl chitosan coated iron oxide/gold hybrid nanobiocomposites for lung cancer imaging (MRI and CT) and therapy” elaborated on the art of thesis writing to the Post Graduates. Her talk was on “ How to write a thesis? A step by step approach".
Dr. S. Kalpana, Senior Research Officer, Department of Epidemiology, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and the Principal Investigator of research projects funded by INCLEN highlted on “Funding research – Approaches & Difficulties. Her outstanding oration on the ethics and art of writing research proposals to International and National funding agencies was widely received by the young researches from various academic institutions.
Dr. E. M. Shankar, currently the Dean, School of Biological sciences, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur, India delivered a lecture on “Mastering the art of high impact writing in biomedical journals. Dr. E M Shankar having more than 106 research publications in national and international journals and the Associate Editor and Academic Editor of various PubMed and Scopus indexed journals such as PlosOne, BMC Immunology, BMC Infectious Diseases, etc. highlighted the requirement for an ethics check on manuscripts before submission to restrain from subsequent journal rejection and/or retraction
This one day seminar was an eyeopener for the young researchers and academicians on the overall aspect of academic publishing highlighting the best practices in publication ethics
The delegates were trained to conduct plagiarism checks and to interpret plagiarism reports.
The academic meet received an overwhelming response of nearly 125 delegates from academia, clinicians and young researchers. The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai was accredited this One day seminar with 5 credit points.
The seminar provided a platform where eminent speakers from Government and Private sectors shared their experience on Scientific Writing and Publication Skills:

Workshop on Basic Life support, Medical Emergencies in Dental Practise,and IV & IM cannulation techniques was conducted in association with TACT Academy for clinical training on 22nd and 23rd June 2017
Interactive Seminar on CBCT was conducted on 3rd April 2018.Lectures by eminent faculties.An ellaborate presentation regarding the use of software of CBCT for various diagnostic purposes was given.
National Symposium on Temporo Mandibular Joint Disorders was organised on Friday 28th June 2019 in association with Tamilnadu State Council for Science & Technology.The diagnosis,medical,orthodontic,prosthodontic,and surgical management of TMJ was elaborated.

CLASS II CORRECTIONS
An intense one-day lecture series on self-ligation systems and class II correctors by Dr Chetan V Jayade was organized and conducted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in tandem with 3M on 11th June 2019. The programme had extensive participation from both faculty and students alike. The clinical acumen and content shared by Dr Jayade was highly commended.

The Self Ligation appliance with its Gold standard as the Damon system has been able to live up to the expectations of both the clinicians and patients. Dr Abhishek Ghosh, a remarkable practitioner featured a fabulous lecture series on TADs and the Damom system. His evidence based Orthodontic results, implications of skill and innovation to achieve these results, references were exemplary. The delegates all had a wonderful learning experience.

Structured Reseacrh Methodology
A hands-on research methodology workshop was conducted on 21st January 2021, at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai organized by the Directorate of Research, Bharath University. It was a hybrid programme, one of its kind with both online and in person lectures by Dr Badri Thiruvenkatachari and Dr Steve Chadwick. Key highlights included a workshop on Writing a research protocol and Grant applications. The course was attended by faculties and postgraduate students of multiple disciplines across Medicine and Dentistry and was a grand success.
