HOD's Message
Welcome to the Periodontics Department of Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, one of the Premier Dental Institutions. The Department of Periodontics SBDCH deals with the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the Periodontium . Our foresight in the long run for the department at our college is to provide better health care facilities, teaching and research involving diseases of the periodontal tissues. Students are encouraged to learn theoretical as well as practical knowledge and to apply it in their future dental practice. Postgraduates are constantly challenged with complex cases to develop their clinical as well as patient management skills . Quality research requires adherence to the highest standards of integrity in proposing and conducting which is one of the most preferential domains offered by our department . The department of Periodontics boasts of efficient and student friendly faculty . The department also has the state of the art facilities for both undergraduates and postgraduates at their disposal.
Vision
The Department of Periodontics provides didactic and clinic instruction in Periodontology at the Undergraduate and the Post Graduate levels. The department also provides instruction via continuing dental education courses to practicing dentists. The training is adjusted to the level of competency of the student. The clinical areas of instruction include periodontal examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, case presentation and communication, therapies, and outcome assessments for periodontal pathologies and implant therapy, in otherwise healthy as well as medically compromised patients.
The didactic areas of instruction include the normal periodontium at the macro and microscopic level, periodontal pathology including intra-oral lesions associated with periodontal conditions, periodontal microbiology and immunology, pain control and pharmacology applicable to periodontal treatments, cell biology, wound healing including periodontal regeneration, minimally invasive surgical procedures, dental implantology, case management, epidemiology and statistics in Periodontology.
Research methodology is primarily taught to students. Faculty members are actively participating in basic and applied sciences research and provide students instruction and guidance in research. The current primary areas of research include, but are not limited to, studies of cellular and humoral immunity in periodontal disease, the microbiology of the periodontal infection, periodontal regeneration, implant procedures and outcome assessments, periodontal diagnostics, infections in the periodontium, epidemiology, proteomics & genomics, influence of COVID 19 and technologies like Artificial intelligence & Machine learning.
Mission
● Provide accessible and proper oral healthcare to both healthy as well as otherwise compromised patients
● To train students to be clinically proficient , empathetic and ethical dentists
● To provide a strong basic foundation of Periodontics.
● To encourage quality research among both professors and students.

Best Practices
For UG Students
1. Problem based approach:
• The Under Graduate students are taught in a systematic and in a problem based approach system.
Module 1 – Gingivitis
Module 2 – Periodontitis.
• The systematic approach begins with the knowledge of basic tissues of periodontium followed by its pathological features in gingiva and other periodontal components.
• Students are presented with a problem and they are guided to diagnose and formulte a treatment plan.
2. Periodic Assessment Tests:
The students are evaluated every month through uniformed evaluations through
• MCQ’s
• Case scenarios.
The best performing students are appreciated
3.Motivating students who progress
Based on continuous evaluation, student efforts are monitored and improvement in the performance are motivated by awarding them with badges.
For PG Students
1.Periodic Assessment Test
PG’s are evaluated each month based on
• Pedagogy
• Clinical skills
• Theoretical exams.
Every month a student is awarded for the best performance
For Staffs
1. Leadership is moulding leaders
The senior faculties mentor and mould the junior staffs in all perspective of the career.
