The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics abides to the University's overall mission to generate, disseminate, and preserve knowledge, and to serve the community.
Our department accomplishes the mission embracing the academic values of the university as well as the ethical responsibilities implicit in the education of future members of a dental health care profession.
Our department is focused to improve the oral health of the community through teaching, service and research.
Through service, the department strives to improve the public's health through outreach programs with attention to minority and underserved communities. The department values diversity in its students, staff, faculty, and patients. It seeks to foster an environment of mutual respect with objectivity, imaginative inquiry through lifelong learning, and the free exchange of ideas.
The department's clinical goal is to prepare a new generation of clinicians to deliver oral health care with skill and compassion.
The department's research programs contribute to understanding biological, behavioral, social, biomedical, and clinical aspects of orofacial health that expands the boundaries of our knowledge and builds on discoveries to enhance human life.

History
The Time Line
1989 : We commenced as an Orthodontic Teaching Hospital
1992 : The 1st Batch of Under Graduates of SBDCH entered Clinical Posting
1994 : First Batch of BDS passed out from the Department
1997 : First Batch of MDS commenced with 2 PGs
2000 : First Batch of MDS passed out
2002 : The department started functioning as under the domain of Bharath University
2007 : PG intake increased from 2 to 4 Nos/ Year
2010 : Established the Roth Williams TMJ Research Laboratory
Transformation- Department of Orthodontics 2.0
In 2015, our department was facelifted into a state of art facility and an academic centre par excellence. The 12,000 sq feet department is fully furnished with centrally air-conditioned post graduate clinics with 16 dental units. The goal was to make the working environment more conducive for the students to maximise productivity.
However, it is not the posh infrastructure that makes a student feel comfortable, but it is the overall vibe that makes them love working peacefully.
Academic Programmes
UG Curriculum:
1.DCI Requirements:
The syllabus for and postgraduate students is strictly followed according to the DCI protocol. Lessons/ Classes would be planned and staffs are allocated with their turns on specific days.Notes and useful study materials would be given to students on a regular basis. Mock tests are held to prepare them for final exams. Special care and attention would be given for those who do not perform well. They would be identified and given additional hours of coaching. Records and workbooks of all students are assessed and monitored routinely.
2.Added Curriculum :
- Train Final Year BDS specially on concepts of Myofunctional orthodontics and make every student submit fabrication of an appliance on Mannequins
- Making it a Mandate that Every Intern, record , diagnose and plan treatment for a patient requiring Preventive and or interceptive Orthodontics. Latter they fabricate and deliver a corresponding appliance as per the treatment plan with guidance of a Postgraduate
- Each Undergraduate make a Digital Photography,Digital Scan,Digital Ceph and Computerised Cephalometric evaluation on a patient- thus learning the art of Computerised-Digital Orthodontic Diagnosis
3.Soft Skill Development
There are periodic lectures on self – development to keep the students spirits high and keen on learning.

- Every Post Graduate make Digital Photography, Digital Scan, Digital Ceph and Computerised Cephalometric evaluation off all the patients allotted under them for treatment
- Every PG needs to finish 2 cases treated with Digital Aligner Orthodontics as a basic requisite for 3 MDS course competition Program
- Every PG makes minimum ONE face bow transfer corresponding to fully adjustable articulation using axiograogh, and prepare a therapeutic splint to treat TMD
- Each PG submits one Systematic Review at end of each 1st and 2nd Year of 3 years PG program
- Each PG takes up a 6 months long Mini Research project which gets approved from directorate of Research at the commencement of 2nd Year MDS
3.Soft Skill Development
All PGs are trained in taking Seminars and Journal club discussions. It teaches thwm to research in depth about any particular topic.
4.Psychological Owners
Each PG is given an individual cubicle, to develop a sense of Ownership and to personalize their workspace. It gives them an opportunity to get creative and enjoy their work!
5.Vertical Slots / Team Spirit
The Post - Graduates are teamed in Vertical Slot System, which encompasses one PG from every year. This further enables the freshers to get better oriented, as the seniors take them under their wings and guide the juniors.

WILKODONTICS:
Accelerated orthodontics is practised in collaboration with the department of periodontics for fastening the orthodontic treatment
TMJ
One of the very few colleges in the country to allocate a research laboratory exclusively for temporomandibular joint disorders and to offer treatment for the same.
LINGUAL ORTHODONTICS
Lingual orthodontics is a “hidden braces” treatment for those who don’t like to show off their braces.Lingual braces are attached to the backside of the tooth unlike regular braces which are attached to the outside of the tooth. So the braces remain invisible from the outside.

PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
The Students are trained to approach diagnosis and treatment planning for patients as a Problem Based Learning method to solve the mystery in each Patient Case. This is done to make learning more fun, interactive and practical

Institute of Lingual Orthodontics, Indirapuram, Delhi and Bharath University have entered to a memorandum on 20th August 2017. The scope of this MoU is to organize fellowships in Lingual Orthodontics for faculty and PG students at Sree Balaji Dental College.

Grand ALUMNI reunion
A lovely day at Sree Balaji Dental College. Happy to welcome 23/50 PGs who had passed out of the Department of Orthodontics. It was a grand Alumni reunion and I thank every alumnus who made it all the way. Some came from Delhi.. some from Sharjah and lot other places. Dr Poorna Devadoss, 1998 batch- 2nd PG to pass out & senior most alumnus, unveiled late Dr Kannappan's photograph in the department. What we are today is because of Dr JGK's guidance & inspiration. Principal Dr Jayesh & Registrar Dr Bhuminathan, unveiled the Alumni name plaque of 50 PGs passes out to alumni since 1997-2014

1. ANNUAL POST EXAMINATIONATION AND PRESENTATION BY OUTGOING PGs
Annually, the outgoing post graduates present their best treated cases as an exhibit. This is attended by various faculty and postgraduates from other dental specialities. This exhibition serves as a platform to motivate and encourage the postgraduates toward further excellence in the field of Orthodontics.
2.GROOMING LEADERSHIP AND TEAM WORK -VERTICAL SLOTS
To bring about maximum output and a good rapport among seniors and juniors the vertical slot system is followed which consists of 3 Pgs who form a team (one from each year).This team work consists of students at different grade levels who work together to acquire the academic skills needed for success.
3.STAR ORTHODONTIST - APRON WINNERS
A postgraduate every year is awarded the STAR ORTHODONTIST APRON award. Selection of the best performer depends on both their clinical acumen and practice management skills. This award is highly coveted among the postgraduates and acts as a source of encouragement and motivation for their future endeavours.
4.UG - PG TEAM WORK
We at the Department of Orthodontics, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital promote interaction in clinics between the Undergraduates and Postgraduates allowing exemplary clinical exposure to the UGs. This also facilitates development of a symbiotic learning experience between the students, thereby honing their skills both as individual practitioners and as team players.

5.OUTREACH PROGRAM : SMILE TORCH
It was an initiative taken by IOS in order to spread the awareness about the importance of orthodontic procedures to the general public. We had the privilege of the prestigious torch on behalf of the state. On the 21st August, “The smile torch” arrived to our college. We were greatly pleased and proud to welcome the smile torch.

This rapport of celebrating festivals, birthday parties together. Travelling together for conferences, attending students wedding etc. Establish a strong bond between us and students.
4th Indian Lingual Orthodontic Congress And International Conference

LINGUAL ORTHODONTICS
THE 4TH International Lingual Orthodontic Congress, International Conference and Workshop was conducted from 13th – 17th August 2015 hosted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. The programme featured eminent speakers including the Father of Modern Lingual Orthodontics Dr Dider Fillion, Dr Clemens Fricke, Dr Isao Matsuno, Dr Tushar Hegde, Dr Pavin Shetty, Dr Jignesh Kothari, Dr Anmol Kalha, Dr Suryakanta Das and Dr R V Murali. The workshop offered a panoramic yet detailed insight into the field of Lingual Orthodontics. With an astounding number of participants, the conference was a grand success, and the Organizing team was highly commended.
Training and Workshop on Preparation and Orientation for Membership in Orthodontics (M Ortho) Royal College of surgeons- 21st& 22nd Jan
MOrth RCS ORIENTATION
The Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) is a bi-collegiate (RCS and RFPSG) specialist membership diploma which equips general dental practitioners with expertise in Orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. Passing the MOrth demonstrates an understanding of diagnosis and treatment planning over a wide range of problems in orthodontics together with a high level of expertise in carrying out orthodontic treatment. An orientation programme to these exams was conducted as part of the faculty development by Dr Chetan V Jeyade and Dr Jayesh S Rahalkar on 20th and 21st January 2017 at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai; and saw participation from Orthodontic faculty all across the state.

IBO – AWARENESS
THE INDIAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS (IBO) is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the Indian orthodontic society. The IBO sets the standards for the highest level of patient care and promotes excellence in Orthodontics for all of its certified orthodontists. As a specialty board, it serves to protect the orthodontic specialty and encourage orthodontists to achieve certification, demonstrating their commitment to lifelong learning and excellent care. The Indian board of orthodontics is the resource for orthodontists, as well as anyone looking for the best in orthodontic care. The IBO awareness program motivates, guides and encourage IOS members and IOS student members in pursuing IBO Certification. It was conducted on 3rd September 2017 at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai with participation from both Orthodontic faculty and Postgraduates alike.

A one day symposium on Nickel Titanium by Dr Alberto Teramoto was conducted at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital on 19th September 2017. Key areas of material properties, applications and recent developments in Nickel Titanium were discussed elaborately. Dr Teramoto launched and shared his book on Sentalloy with all participants. The symposium was well received by all the attendees.
The Orthodontic Road Show- Workshop on Contemporary Orthodontics with Digital Workflow - YULY MONCAYO
Dr Yuly Moncayo is a celebrity speaker popular in the International Orthodontic arena. She delivered a lecture and live demonstration on 23rd January 2018 at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. Her session primarily focused on recent trends and practices in Orthodontics with emerging techniques and biometrics on using TADs and Aligners. She offered the participants an insight into Orthodontic photography that encompasses her stylish and avant-garde work in the field of Orthodontics.
PARADIGM SHIFT IN DENTAL EDUCATION – A FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Faculty development programmes in Orthodontics concentrate on the various facets like upgradation of knowledge, honing of clinical skills, adopting new methodologies attributing to curriculum development, explore new arenas into research and import and promote Orthodontic education. A faculty development programme was conducted my Dr Sabarainathan on 11th January 2019 with primary focus on the current trends and advancements in teaching and in dental education.

CLASS II CORRECTIONS
An intense one-day lecture series on self-ligation systems and class II correctors by Dr Chetan V Jayade was organized and conducted by Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in tandem with 3M on 11th June 2019. The programme had extensive participation from both faculty and students alike. The clinical acumen and content shared by Dr Jayade was highly commended.

The Self Ligation appliance with its Gold standard as the Damon system has been able to live up to the expectations of both the clinicians and patients. Dr Abhishek Ghosh, a remarkable practitioner featured a fabulous lecture series on TADs and the Damom system. His evidence based Orthodontic results, implications of skill and innovation to achieve these results, references were exemplary. The delegates all had a wonderful learning experience.

A hands-on research methodology workshop was conducted on 21st January 2021, at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai organized by the Directorate of Research, Bharath University. It was a hybrid programme, one of its kind with both online and in person lectures by Dr Badri Thiruvenkatachari and Dr Steve Chadwick. Key highlights included a workshop on Writing a research protocol and Grant applications. The course was attended by faculties and postgraduate students of multiple disciplines across Medicine and Dentistry and was a grand success.
